Alternatives to Hip Replacement Surgery

As we age, there are many changes happening to our bodies. When we begin to enter the latter half of our lives, things like arthritis and joint pain become a very real problem. For many the pain becomes so severe that surgery is require to replace a joint. Many Americans consider hip replacement, when the pain becomes almost intolerable. However, in the case of hip replacement, there are some alternatives that you really should try if you can.

Hip replacement should only be done in the most severe cases where the pain in the hip becomes unbearable and begins to interfere in the person's daily life.

Walking Aids are another way to limit the pain of the joint. By using a cane or walker the use of the joint is limited, this does not necessarily heal the joint, but takes some of the pressure and stress from daily events off of the joint.

Medication is a recommended alternative to subside the hip pain. However, many who have severe hip pain will find that eventually the medication will stop helping and the pain will come back.

Exercises that are low-impact are good for helping manage hip pain. Some of these exercises are things like swimming. The water allows you to get some therapy for the pain, but at the same time eases the stress on the joint.

Anti-inflammatory pain medications (NSAIDs) are prescription and nonprescription drugs that help treat pain and inflammation.

Hip osteotomy is a procedure that is done in hopes of realigning the bones of the hip joint. The osteotomy can be performed on the thigh bone (femur), the pelvis, or both. Osteotomies are usually performed on patients that have an underlying problem that has led to early arthritis of the hip joint.

Resection arthroplasty (girdlestone procedure) is a procedure that removes the bone around the hip joint. The space is then allowed to fill with scar tissue. However, this procedure is usually done only in patients who have a severe infection that cannot be controlled, or the physical condition of the patient is at a point where they will have little chance of walking normally. A walking aid is normally required after the procedure.

Hip resurfacing surgery is an alternative to the regular hip replacement surgery. Hip resurfacing surgery uses a smaller implant, and there is less normal bone removed. During the procedure, the small amount of bone is removed from the ball-and-socket hip joint. A metal cap is then placed on the top of the ball. Additionally a metal socket is placed in the pelvis, very similar to the regular hip replacement surgery, but with more normal bone preserved.

Men Taking Hormone Treatment for Longer May Improve Prostate Cancer Outlook

Recently a European study found similar results to that of a previous study based in America. Men that have moderately advanced prostate cancer and receive hormone blocking drugs after their radiation therapy will fair better when the drug treatment is continued for two or more years after the first six month regimen.

Dr. Eric M. Horwitz, the acting chairman of radiation oncology at Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, was the one who led the group that did the U.S. study. He says that, the results pretty much mirror those of a similar American trial reported in May. In the U.S study 1,554 men were followed for 10 years. There was no significant difference in the overall survival, with 51.6 percent for the short-term group, and 53.9 percent for the long-term group.

However, among those that were still alive there was quite a significant difference. After 10 years, the survival rate of the cancer-free, short-term group was 13.2 percent. However, in the long-term group was a survival rate of 22.5 percent, nearly 10 percent higher.

Additionally, the spread of cancer to other parts of the body and greater growth of the malignancy within the prostate gland were better for the men that had received the long-term therapy.

However, both of the studies have made reports of side effects that were expected such as, hot flashes, weight gain, osteoporosis and loss of sexual function. Concerning the side effects Dr. Horwitz had this to say, "Some men get them and some do not. Over the last few years, there has been a lot of attention paid to these side effects, in the medical literature and in public awareness, and there has been more reluctance to use this therapy. These studies clearly identify a group of men who benefit from this therapy."
